Understanding AI visibility: questions and answers
What AI visibility means, how it differs from SEO, and what a mention can tell you.
What is AI brand visibility?

AI brand visibility describes whether, and how often, an AI assistant names your brand in answers to questions relevant to your market. It is measured against a defined set of prompts, not against every conversation taking place on an AI platform.
For example, a cordless-tool brand could test research questions such as “What should I look for in a drill?”, comparison questions about battery platforms, and purchase questions about drilling into brick. A brand can appear frequently in one group and be absent from another. That distinction is more useful than a single percentage alone.
A useful measurement records the prompt, platform, collection date and answer. It should separate a brand mention from a recommendation, a ranked position and a citation to a particular website. Those are related observations, but they are not interchangeable.
Visibility does not measure how many people saw those answers, clicked a link or bought a product. Use it to find coverage gaps and compare repeat observations. Use analytics and conversion tracking separately to measure business outcomes.
Contxt brings prompt-level answers, platform comparisons and content gaps into one workflow. Read how Contxt works or explore AI visibility features.

Generative engine optimisation is work intended to make a brand’s information easier to discover, understand and use in AI-generated answers. It includes improving factual accuracy, answering relevant buyer questions and making useful evidence accessible on your website.
Start with questions where recorded answers show a gap. Check the sources cited, improve the relevant page, then repeat the measurement. GEO is not a submission process that guarantees a mention, and there is no universal number of citations that makes a brand rank. See content gaps and GEO.

Traditional SEO focuses on discoverability and performance in search results. AI visibility focuses on whether a brand appears in the answers produced by AI assistants for a chosen set of questions.
The work overlaps: accessible pages, accurate information and useful content help both. The measurements differ. A search ranking does not prove an assistant recommended your brand, and an AI mention does not prove a search click. Keep Search Console and website analytics alongside your AI visibility measurements.

No. A visibility tool can record answers, identify patterns and help you prioritise improvements. It cannot control the answers produced by another platform or promise traffic, sales or a particular ranking.
Treat claims of guaranteed AI recommendations with caution. Ask which prompts were tested, which platforms were used and whether the recorded answers are available. A credible result explains its scope and limitations as well as its findings.
