What Businesses Must Know About AI Visibility Gaps
It's a competitive world out there, and if there's one thing that can sink a business faster than you can say "AI visibility gaps", it's being overlooked by the very systems designed to serve up information to your customers. Today, I’m diving deep into a topic that’s become increasingly crucial for brands: how they can ensure they’re actually seen in the world of artificial intelligence.
Before we delve into the nitty-gritty, let's kick things off with a striking data point: across our dataset, we’ve run a massive 6853 AI prompts spanning 55 businesses. Sounds like a lot, right? Well, it is, and it reveals some fascinating insights into how visibility in AI systems varies wildly compared to traditional web search.
And here’s where it gets interesting: the numbers don’t lie. In our analysis, we've uncovered a broad spectrum of visibility among different brands. Some soar high above the rest, while others struggle to be heard. This really matters. If you’re a business sitting on the sidelines while your competitors dominate search results, you’re missing out on a colossal opportunity. So, let’s unpack what this means for you.
The Hidden AI Visibility Gaps
What exactly do I mean when I talk about AI visibility gaps? In simple terms, it’s the disparity in how brands are recognised by different AI systems. Just think about it: if your brand is visible in one AI platform but completely invisible on another, you're missing critical chances to connect with potential customers. And trust me, that can leave you at a significant disadvantage.
For example, our data shows that ChatGPT has a staggering 72.1% brand mention rate, 2449 prompts tested. In contrast, Google AI Overview comes in significantly lower at 46.6% with 1988 prompts. This is a major divergence. It means a brand visible on ChatGPT is far from guaranteed to appear on Google AI answers, and vice versa. And 36% of the time, they provide conflicting recommendations! Imagine a customer searching for your brand and receiving completely different results depending on the AI they’re using. This is not just an oversight; it’s a potential loss of business.
But wait, it gets worse. Of the 55 brands we track, 18% fall into the low visibility category, with ten brands showing rates below 30%. Take DUO, for instance, which has a dismal 0.0% visibility rate. Yes, you read that right, zero. Related reading: this piece about the brand invisibility paradox: why 80% of b2b brands are.... Why This Matters More Than Most People Realise
I was chatting with a marketing director last week who described this phenomenon as the "invisible brand syndrome." He explained how frustrating it is to pump money into marketing only to find out that consumers simply can’t find the brand when they need it the most. It’s a bit of a minefield and frankly, it’s shocking how many brands are out there, unaware of their AI visibility gaps.
Look, when customers are looking for products or services, they’re not using a guidebook from the 90s, they’re relying on cutting-edge AI models to give them the most relevant and timely information. You can AI visibility tracking features to see for yourself. You can the Contxt scanning process to see for yourself. If you’re not showing up, you’re not in the game.
So, what’s at stake here? Well, everything. AI visibility gaps impact brand equity, trust, and ultimately, sales. If you’re not being recommended when customers ask about your product, someone else will gladly take your place. I've written about this separately in The Invisible Brands: Understanding the Commercial Impact.... This is a real problem and one that could lead to long-term implications for your business growth.
Understanding Visibility Distribution
To really grasp the impact of AI visibility gaps, let’s look at the visibility distribution across the 55 tracked brands in our dataset. We’ve categorised brand visibility into three groups: low visibility (below 30%), mid-range (30-70%), and high visibility (70%+).
Of those brands, a whopping 53% fall into the high visibility category, including names like Specialist Blinds and Red Fern, both sitting pretty at a 100% mention rate. But here’s the kicker: the widest range in our dataset stretches from 0.0% visibility with DUO all the way to 100.0% with Specialist Blinds. If that doesn’t wake you up to the reality of your own visibility, I don’t know what will.
I don’t buy the hype around “AI will replace everything” narrative. Instead, it’s tools like AI that can enhance your presence and visibility if used correctly. We just need to be savvy enough to see the potential, and act on it. My read on this data is that businesses can no longer afford to ignore their visibility in AI platforms.
Key Findings from Our Testing Lab
In our Testing Lab, we ran 75 completed experiments across 15 businesses, focusing on various aspects of visibility and brand mention rates. Here’s what actually surprised me: brand mention rates can vary dramatically based on the type of query. You might find that the same brand is recommended in one context, while completely absent in another. This is a crucial insight because it suggests that there's more than just visibility at play; there's context too.
For example, in our buying-intent tests, we ran 14 buying-intent scenarios. The results were eye-opening. Depending on how a customer phrases their query, the likelihood of your brand being mentioned can change, altering the very landscape of visibility. It raises the question: how well do you understand the language your customers are using to search for your products?
Companies that simply rely on a one-size-fits-all strategy for visibility are digging their own graves. Understanding these nuances is paramount to enhancing your brand's visibility across AI platforms, because, at the end of the day, if you’re not top of mind when a potential customer searches, you’re likely losing the sale to a competitor.
What Brands Can Do About AI Visibility Gaps
Right, so we know there’s a problem. But what can you actually do about it? First off, consider the following actionable steps to improve your AI visibility.
1. Perform an AI Visibility Audit
Before you can fix any issues, you have to know what those issues are. Conduct an audit of your brand's visibility across various AI platforms. Use tools like our Contxt services to track how your brand is being mentioned in different AI systems. This will provide you with a baseline from which to improve.
2. Tailor Your Content for Different Platforms
Remember that different AI systems may favour different types of content and language. For example, some systems might respond better to conversational queries, while others may be more geared towards formalised content. Adjust your content strategy accordingly, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
3. Invest in AI-Specific SEO
Yes, regular SEO still matters, but in the world of AI, you need to think differently. Optimise for the kinds of queries that AI platforms are likely to return. This means using keyword phrases that align with common questions and queries relevant to your industry. At the end of the day, you're trying to speak the same language as your audience, and that includes AI bots too.
4. Monitor Competitor Performance
Don’t just look at your own brand, keep an eye on what your competitors are doing, especially those with high visibility rates. What strategies are they employing? What keywords are they targeting? This can provide invaluable insights into how you can boost your own visibility.
5. Embrace Continuous Testing
Don't treat visibility improvement as a one-off task. We've learned that AI visibility is dynamic. What works today may not work tomorrow. Constantly test and iterate on your strategies to see what resonates best with your audience. Use our platform for ongoing A/B testing and adjust based on real-time data.
6. Engage with Your Audience
Sometimes, it’s not just about AI visibility, it’s about brand loyalty. Engaging with your audience through social media and other platforms can help fortify your brand's presence. The more you interact, the more likely customers are to recommend you, both to AI systems and to other potential customers.
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, AI visibility gaps are a reality that businesses need to confront head-on. It’s no longer enough to just have a website or a social media presence. You need to ensure that you're visible in the places that matter most, even if that means releasing control over how your brand is perceived.
Only by understanding these gaps can businesses hope to improve their visibility and stay ahead of the competition. My advice? Take action now. Because the longer you wait, the larger those gaps are going to grow, and trust me, they can swallow your brand whole before you even know what hit you.
