The Two Visibility Problems Every Business Now Has (and Why Solving One Does Not Solve the Other)

Every business now has two distinct visibility problems: search and AI. Here is why solving one does not solve the other, and what a practical dual strategy looks like.

The Problem Nobody Saw Coming

For years, digital visibility was a one-dimensional game: could people find you on Google? Your ranking determined the answer. Page one? You were visible. Page two or beyond? You were invisible. And the entire SEO industry existed to solve that single challenge.

That challenge hasn’t gone away, Google still processes billions of searches daily, and SEO still delivers value. But a second, equally critical visibility problem has emerged. Most businesses haven’t caught up yet.

Here’s the reality: 50% of consumers now turn to AI assistants for purchase research. Sixty percent say chatbot interactions influence their decisions. ChatGPT alone has 800 million weekly users. When someone asks an AI, "What’s the best accounting software for small businesses?" or "Which broadband provider is strongest in Manchester?" your brand either gets mentioned, or it doesn’t.

These are two entirely separate visibility problems. And solving one doesn’t automatically solve the other.

Keep Measurements Separate

This is critical. SEO and GEO have different KPIs, and blending them will only cloud your understanding.

SEO metrics are well established: rankings, organic traffic, click-through rates, and search-driven conversions. GEO metrics are newer: citation frequency across AI platforms, share of voice in AI responses, brand sentiment, and AI-referred traffic and conversion rates.

Track them separately to see where each strategy succeeds, and where it needs work.

The Cost of Inaction

It’s tempting to wait. GEO is uncharted territory, the tools are immature, and the strategies are still evolving. Why act now?

Because AI visibility compounds over time. Brands that establish strong entity authority and citation patterns early will build an advantage that latecomers can’t easily overcome. It’s the same dynamic that rewarded early SEO adopters with unassailable domain authority.

The shift is already happening. McKinsey estimates AI-mediated commerce will reach £2-4 trillion globally by 2030. Gartner predicts 90% of B2B purchases will involve AI agents by 2028. And AI search advertising is projected to grow from £800 million to £20 billion between 2025 and 2029.

With 50% of consumers already using AI for research, every month without a GEO strategy is another month you risk falling behind.

Two Problems, Two Strategies

Here’s the bottom line: your brand now needs to win in two arenas. SEO ensures visibility in traditional search results. GEO ensures visibility in AI-generated answers. Each drives revenue. Each needs its own approach. And solving one doesn’t solve the other.

Start by assessing your current AI visibility. Build a GEO plan that complements your SEO efforts, with its own goals, tactics, and metrics. The brands that act now will lead as the balance between traditional search and AI-driven discovery shifts further.
