The Cross-Provider Visibility Gap: Why Your Brand Might Be Invisible to AI Systems Let me ask you something: when was the last time you searched for your brand on an AI system like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview? And I mean properly searched, running prompts that a customer or client might actually use? If the answer is never, you’re not alone. That’s what most businesses are doing: ignoring one of the biggest shifts in digital marketing since search engines went mainstream. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: just because you’ve optimised your website or hammered out a solid SEO strategy doesn’t mean AI systems are recommending you. In fact, there's a good chance they’re not. Across the dataset we’ve built at Contxt, 39% of the time, ChatGPT and Google AI give completely different brand recommendations for the exact same query . Think about that. You could own the conversation on one AI platform but vanish into thin air on another. My theory? Businesses are asleep at the wheel when it comes to AI visibility, and it’s going to cost them. But the good news is, if you act now, you’re firmly ahead of the curve. A comparison of visibility rates between ChatGPT and Google AI The AI Visibility Gap Is Real, and It’s Wide Let’s get into the numbers. Across 2361 prompts tested in our system, ChatGPT had a brand mention rate of 74.4%. That’s decent. But Google AI Overview came in at just 43.5%. And Perplexity? 42.7%. The difference is night and day. What’s even more fascinating is that divergence: 39% of the time, brands were mentioned on one platform but not the other. Here’s an example that really stuck with me. One of the brands in our dataset, Iconsys 2, a player in manufacturing and industrial automation, had a visibility rate of 6.7%. Yes, you read that right, 6.7%. That’s practically invisible. Meanwhile, Viking Pumps and IPU both clocked 100% across all the AI systems tested.
